Goodell Gardens & Homestead

Description

Goodell Gardens & Homestead, founded in 2001, sits on a portion of the 78-acre Goodell family farm. Sisters Carrie & Margaret Goodell left their estate to provide a place to learn about plants and nature, the relationship between plants and humanity, and the heritage of the Goodell Family, while offering a greenspace to the communities of Washington Township, Edinboro Borough, and the surrounding regions. Our mission is to hold and maintain botanical and historical collections for exhibition and interpretation to encourage public understanding and appreciation of plants, their relationship to humanity, and the heritage of the Goodell Family.

Goodell Gardens is particularly proud to display our Paper Birch (Betula papyrifera), commonly called White Birch which was planted in 1936 and is now a Pa State Champion.  With a circumference of 99inches and standing 82 feet tall, this tree is the largest Paper Birch in Pennsylvania. We also have a collection of Rhododendron, a Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glypstrobodies), and a specimen of the extirpated Ben Franklin Tree (Franklinia alatamaha).
