Tree conservation

On the heels of the conservation gap analysis of US native oaks, The Morton Arboretum, in partnership with BGCI US and the United States Forest Service, will extend this study to additional U.S. tree groups in 2018. Priority tree genera have been targeted: Carya, Fagus, Gymnocladus, Juglans, Lindera, Magnolia, Persea, Pinus, Sassafras, Taxus.

The world’s tree species are in urgent need of assistance. With more than 9,000 species sliding towards extinction, there is an ever growing need to take action to halt or abate the decline of wild populations.

For nearly all tree species, the protection of healthy and well-connected habitats is the number one priority.
