In 2017, at the request of BGCI’s International Advisory Council, BGCI produced a Technical Review on defining the botanic garden, and how to measure performance and success. In carrying out this survey and review, it became clear that too few botanic gardens measure the impacts of their work. Instead, there is a strong tendency to measure areas of activity.

BGCI’s recent gap analysis has identified 20 Angiosperm families and almost 7,000 threatened tree species that appear to be completely missing from botanic garden living collections.

BGCI and ArbNet are delighted to announce the first set of grants awarded in the framework of the BGCI/ArbNet Partnership Programme. This is an international partnership building initiative that aims to facilitate the exchange of knowledge, skills and resources within the botanic garden and arboretum community.
On 5 July 2017, the second BGCI / ArbNet partnership agreement was signed between the South London Botanical Institute (SLBI) and the Botanic Garden of the Sapienza Unversity, Rome, Italy

Recognising the ever-increasing needs and requests for technical guidance on botanic garden development and management, BGCI has been working on the establishment of a new botanic garden manual since late 2013.
On 2 June 2017, the first BGCI / ArbNet partnership agreement was signed between Vilnius University (on behalf of the Vilnius University Botanic Garden), Lithuania and The Tasmanian Arboretum Inc. Australia.
The Cooperation Agreement was signed by Dr Audrius Skridaila for Vilnius University and Phill Parsons for the Tasmanian Arboretum.

BGCI has launched a new database – ThreatSearch. ThreatSearch is the most comprehensive database of conservation assessments of plants. It contains over 242,000 conservation assessments, representing over 150,000 taxa.
BGCI is pleased to announce a call for nominations for the Marsh Awards for International Plant Conservation and Botanic Garden Education sponsored by the Marsh Christian Trust.
