Lyon Arboretum and UH School of Architecture partner for Award Winning Project!

Lyon Arboretum

Lyon Arboretum is proud to acknowledge the success of our ongoing partnership with the University of Hawai`i at Manoa School of Architecture.  Through Lyon’s “Albizia (Falcataria moluccana) Tree Removal Project “, a UH School of Architecture Doctoral candidate, Joseph Valenti, was able to source timber from this invasive tree to be engineered into materials used to build  temporary transient shelters.

On March 11, 2016, at the 4th Annual Hawai`i Sustainability in Higher Education Summit awards ceremony,  Joseph was presented the Green Project Implementation Award for his project proposal,”[Re]Scaling Urbanism: Fostering Low-Tech, Digitally Fabricated and Transient Structures Through Innovation in Local Renewable Material.”  The $10,000 award will be used to apply his research and fabricate a full-scale mock up (or perhaps even a prototype) of his transient housing unit utilizing engineered Falcataria moluccana (Albizia) wood.
